This journal was created to provide students with definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and example sentences of twenty-five of the most often used words from the SAT and ACT tests. The word study journal is a monthly series that will help students learn multiple aspects of unfamiliar words. Vocabulary R.A.P. Camp is a literacy program that focuses on improving reading comprehension through exposure to SAT and ACT level vocabulary. Students are given the opportunity to discover the artistry in language when upper-level vocabulary and Hip-Hop are fused to create an engaging, learning experience.
 
The premise of Vocabulary R.A.P. Camp is the dynamic combination of Hip-Hop music and one of the most important rudiments of comprehension, vocabulary. As an educator, I have seen students struggle for years with challenging vocabulary. The National Reading Panel of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD, 2000) found vocabulary instruction to be an essential skill that students need to improve reading performance. In fact, there is compelling evidence to support supplying vocabulary instruction not only to improve students’ reading comprehension and writing quality, but also their listening vocabulary and their speaking vocabulary (Joshi, 2006; Kame’enui & Baumann, 2012). Vocabulary knowledge, including both oral and written vocabulary, is critically important for a child’s success in school (Kamil et al., 2008). As school districts across the nation battle with literacy issues, this program strives to engage students by using music, technology, and literacy.
